How to read your glasses prescription

How to enter your glasses prescription

OD is an abbreviation for the Latin term oculus dexter which means right eye. Notice that the right eye information is asked for first even though we typically read from left to right.

OS is an abbreviation of the Latin oculus sinister which means left eye. That will be referenced on the far right column of the prescription.

SPH is short for sphere. The sphere of your prescription indicates the power on the lenses that is needed to see clearly. A plus (+) symbol indicates the eyeglass wearer is farsighted. A minus (-) symbol indicates that the eyeglass wearer is nearsighted.

CYL is short for cylinder. The cylinder indicates the lens power necessary to correct astigmatism. If the column has no value (is blank), it indicates that the eyeglass wearer does not have astigmatism. If this is the case on your prescription, you can leave it blank when entering it in.

AXIS is a prescription will include an axis value for those with astigmatism. This number represents the angle of the lens that shouldn't feature a cylinder power to help correct your astigmatism.

ADD is short for "additional correction." This is where details about bifocals, multifocal lenses or progressive lenses would appear.

B.C. is short for base curve measurement indicates the back curvature of your contact lens, in millimetres. This is important for comfort, as the BC of your contact lenses should match your eye's natural curve as closely as possible to ensure a better fit when you are wearing your contact lenses.

DIA is short for "diameter," or the distance from one edge of the contact lens to the other. This is measured in millimeters.

Measurements
If you already have a pair of glasses, you can compare the measurements to your current frame. Just look inside your temple to find your frame measurements. The overall frame size is a combination of lens and bridge's width measurements.
Lens Width Bridge Width Temple Length
XS < 42 mm < 16 mm <=128 mm
S 42 mm - 48 mm 16 mm - 17 mm 128 mm - 134 mm
M 49 mm - 52 mm 18 mm - 19 mm 135 mm - 141 mm
L >52 mm >19 mm >= 141 mm
STEP 1
Choose your style
It all starts with the perfect pair of frames. Use our filter to narrow down frames by colour, shape, material, and specific features.
Picture your perfect pair
Use our virtual try on tool to see how different frames look on you-fun, easy, and risk-free!
STEP 2
Prepare your prescription & measurements
Have your current glasses prescription (SPH, CYL, AXIS) and pupillary distance (PD) ready for accurate lens positioning. Use our "Measure My PD" tool for easy PD measurement and frame size guidance.
STEP 3
Find your perfect lenses
What's your vision need?
Do you need lenses for distance, reading, or both? Choose single vision, reading, or progressive lenses based on your glasses prescription.
How will you use them?
Think about your daily activities. Do you spend hours on screens (blue light lenses), go between indoors and outdoors (transition lenses), or need protection from the sun (sunglasses lenses)?
Make your lenses uniquely yours.
Select the lens thickness that fits your prescription. Thinner lenses are lighter and more comfortable for everyday wear. All lenses include anti-scratch, anti-reflective, and UV-protective coatings.

2 pairs for peanuts!!
I decided to order online from KITS because they have an amazing selection of glasses and their prices are such a savings compared to any local optometry store, I can't wait to have 2 new pairs to interchange with my wardrobe everyday. I'm so happy I found KITS!!

If you have to get em...KITS makes it easy!
Super easy to navigate the website. I love that it measures, and you can see glasses on your face. As a first time glasses wearer at 48 years old, this is not the easiest thing to choose. I also am very keen to buy Canadian product! Can't wait to get them!

At this price, may as well get a pair for every outfit!
I ordered my first pair in October and was so pleased, I literally stop people who wear glasses to tell them about KITS. At this price, a person can justify getting a pair to coordinate with every outfit.

Excellence experience
Very easy to look at different ones and try them on virtually. The process is simple and fast. They arrived in less than a week all the way to the east coast. I even got a complimentary pair of sunglasses. Very happy and already planning to buy another pair. I recommend to everyone!
